BENGALURU: A special court for cases, registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Bengaluru, on Monday held a city-based woman guilty of indulging in a counterfeit currency racket, busted in the year 2018 and later investigated and charge sheeted by the NIA.
The court will announce the sentence on J Vanita alias Tangam of Ramachandrapura (53) on Tuesday.
Vanita has been in judicial custody of Bengaluru central prison since August 2018.
Vanita and her six associates were arrested in mid-2018 by Madanayakanahalli police after recovering counterfeit currency notes of face value of Rs 6,84,000 with Rs 2,000 denomination.
Vanitha and other accused persons were booked under sections of Indian Penal Code-489B (using fake currency), 489C (possession of fake currency), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code.
Later, the case was handed over to the NIA in September 2018.
Two more suspects were arrested by the NIA later.
In December 2020, three accused-Sajjad Ali, MG Raju and Abdul Khadir – had pleaded guilty and the special court had in February 2021 sentenced them to six years’ simple imprisonment.
Two more accused persons-Gangadhar Ramappa Kokhar and Sabruddin- too were sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.
