NEW DELHI: A 36-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly stabbing his wife to death over suspicion of infidelity in Maujpur, police said.
The incident took place in front of the couple’s two daughters, during which one of them sustained a sharp injury while attempting to intervene and rescue her mother, an official said.
The accused has been identified as Sajid. The police received a PCR call around 1am on Monday reporting a stabbing incident in Vijay Mohalla. “A response team was rushed to the spot where the victim, identified as Nisha, was found with multiple stab wounds inflicted by the accused at their home,” Joy Tirkey, deputy commissioner of police (Northeast) said.
Hearing the screams of the woman, a crowd gathered near the area. By then, the accused had fled from the spot. Stab wounds were seen on the woman’s neck, chest and left hand. She was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to the injuries, police said.
During the scuffle, the couple’s 11-year-old elder daughter tried to intervene, but was stabbed on her hand by her father.
“The couple has two daughters, aged 11 and seven, who were both present at home during the incident. A case has been registered under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Sajid has been apprehended.” said the police.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Sajid used to run a mobile repairing shop sometime back, but had been unemployed recently.
“Initial probe indicated that Sajid was suspicious that the woman was not faithful to him and was having an affair. An argument had broken out between the two over financial difficulties. As the altercation escalated, the suspicion on his part resulted in a fatal confrontation. The weapon used in the crime has been seized and we are probing all the other angles”, the DCP said.
