GURGAON: A 35-year-old businessman went live on Instagram and hanged himself from the ceiling fan of a room in a guesthouse in Sector 38 on Monday evening, moments after his woman friend had left.
Vikram, police said, had checked into the guesthouse with the 20-year-old woman to celebrate her birthday on Sunday evening. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against her after Vikram’s family alleged that she had been blackmailing him for the past few months with a video.
Vikram, a father of two kids, was pursuing a course in pharmacology. He is believed to have met the woman – a student herself – in class.
At their home in Hisar, Vikram’s wife Neeru contested police’s claim that the woman had left the guesthouse when the businessman died by suicide. She alleged that the college student was present in the room and watched as Vikram hanged himself.
“The woman is from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. She knew Vikram was married and threatened to disclose their relationship. She had a video too, with which she would blackmail my husband. He had already paid her Rs 20 lakh, but she asked for more,” said Neetu, who was married to Vikram for four years. “She pushed my husband to suicide. Police should arrest her at the earliest.”
After Vikram checked into the guesthouse on Sunday evening, the woman forced him to make a video call to his family to show he was celebrating her birthday, Neetu alleged.
“She was very much in the room when Vikram hanged himself. She just watched and made no attempt to save him. Let police check her phone. Everything will be clear,” Neetu said.
Following a complaint by her, a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC was registered against the college student at Sadar police station.
Subhash Boken, a spokesperson for Gurgaon police, said Vikram’s family informed them after they watched the Instagram clip.
“According to information we have so far, the woman had left the room before Vikram hanged himself. We are procuring CCTV footage from the guesthouse and collecting other crucial evidence,” he said.
