NEW DELHI: After arrest of former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, some parties of the INDIA bloc have come out in his support, in what is seen as an attempt to reach out to the former CM ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha polls and assembly polls in the state.
The first open support for Naidu came from West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday through a recorded message that was circulated on social media platforms. It was not a simple post on X by Banerjee, but a recorded video message where she speaks out against the move to jail a senior leader and political rival. It was enough of an indication of the INDIA bloc’s attempt to woo Naidu.
“I don’t like the arrest of Chandrababu Naidu, if there is some mistake, you should talk and conduct an investigation. Nothing should be done to anyone vindictively,” she told the media on the arrest of Naidu.
On Tuesday, SP chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, National Conference president and ex-J&K CM Farooq Abdullah and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal came out in Naidu’s support. “It’s unfortunate to see the national president of Telugu Desam Party & former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, who is known as the architect of modern Andhra Pradesh, being arrested on trumped up charges. Such kind of crude vendetta exercise is not conducive for a healthy democracy and should be opposed by all,” said Badal, a former NDA partner, in his post on X.
Abdullah said in a media interview, “They have arrested Chandrababu Naidu in Andhra Pradesh. I think this is a very wrong step. A leader is trying to strengthen his people before the election.
In his post on X, Yadav said,” … arresting opposition leaders has now become a trend of the Centre. Put in jail those who are not with the ruling regime, this was the policy of the autocratic rulers. BJP and their opportunistic friends should remember that such deviation in political behaviour may prove costly.”
