Coimbatore: Fifteen places have been identified in Coimbatore for immersing idols on Vinayagar Chathurthi on September 18.
The idols can be immersed in the following places: Muthanna Kulam, Bhavani river (Sirumugai, Elagampalayam, Thekkampatti, Mettupalayam Subramaniar temple), Ambarampalayam river, Noyyal river, Upparu, Nadumalai aaru, Anaimalai mukkonamaaru, Palathottam (Sirumugai), Sadivayal, Vaalaiyar dam, Aathu Parai (Aazhiyar), Kurichi Kulam, Kuniyamuthur Kulam, Singanallur Kolatheri, and Vellakinar Kulam.
Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati said only individuals and organisations will be allowed to immerse the idols in the above-mentioned places. They should stick to the route map prepared by the police department, he said in a press release issued on Tuesday.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), the Coimbatore Corporation and the police department have urged the public (both individuals and organisations) to install only eco-friendly Vinayagar idols to protect water bodies and preserve the environment.
Individuals and organisations should follow the guidelines while installing the idols for the celebration of Vinayagar Chathurthi: only idols made of natural, biodegradable raw materials such as clay and mud as well as free from plaster of paris (POP) and thermocol (polystyrene) shall be permitted for safe immersion; use of single-use plastics and thermocol materials shall not be permitted; chemical dyes and oil paints for colouring idols are strictly prohibited; enamel and synthetic dye-based paints should be discouraged and instead eco-friendly water-based, natural dyes should be used, the release noted.
If applications for installation of Vinayagar idols are rejected by the sub-collector/revenue divisional officer (RDO)/assistant police commissioners, the parties can go for further appeal to the district collector and Coimbatore city police commissioner, it noted.
