BENGALURU: The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has sought permission from the Supreme Court to conduct admissions to engineering colleges until October 10, 2023, for the current academic year, as it intends to have one more round of counselling, reports Sruthy Susan Ullas.
The KEA’s plea is in view of the academic calendar issued by the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) that says classes for first-year engineering should begin on September 15.
Students seek further Comed-K counselling
KEA, the nodal agency for conducting entrance examinations for admissions to professional courses in the state, has just completed its second round of counselling for UG-Common Entrance Test (CET) candidates and says it needs one more round of counselling to fill in the remaining vacant seats. “We filed the appeal last week and hope to get permission soon,” Ramya S, executive director of KEA, said.
At Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), however, induction programmes are already under way and classes are set to begin from September 15.
Vidyashankar, vice-chancellor, VTU, confirmed that there will be no change to its academic calendar.
“It had already been disrupted due to the pandemic. We are still striving to set it right. Students who have missed the induction programme can go through it later. It is the responsibility of the respective colleges to hold extra classes for those joining late,” the VC explained.
Meanwhile, Comed-K has completed counselling for admissions to private engineering colleges under its jurisdiction, though some students have been demanding one more round.
“A number of CET students are holding Comed-K seats as these are cheaper. Many of them, however, will vacate these seats once CET results are out. This will result in wasted seats that could have otherwise gone to meritorious students from poor and middle-class families. One more round of counselling will help them,” a student reasoned, though Comed-K officials said one more round of counselling is unlikely.
Between 200-250 students are likely to surrender seats upon completion of CET counselling, they added.
