CHENNAI: Political parties in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday criticised the Karnataka government’s refusal to release 5,000 cusecs of water to TN for the next 15 days as per the “directive” of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC).
TNCC president K S Alagiri told reporters that the state unit stood by the farmers of Tamil Nadu in the ongoing dispute. “The Karnataka government initially released 15,000 cusecs and then reduced it to 5,000 cusecs. It was the BJP leaders in Karnataka, who opposed the gesture and accused the Congress government of ignoring the interests of farmers,” the Congress leader alleged.
PMK leader S Ramadoss said the Tamil Nadu government should immediately convene an all-party meeting. “The state government is duty bound to inform the country that political parties in Tamil Nadu are on the same page,” he said.
AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran condemned Karnataka deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar’s statement that the upper riparian state would not release water to Tamil Nadu.
