Guwahati: Assam DGP GP Singh on Wednesday reviewed the law and order situation of a few upper Assam districts, where Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) is in force, as the state government has recently recommended the Centre for complete withdrawal of the Act with effect from October 1.
The DGP, after the review meeting in Sivasagar, said, “We have recommended for withdrawal of the Act and the state government has also recommended the Central government for withdrawal of the act from October 1. If it is approved, then Assam Police and Central Armed Police Forces are 100% prepared.”
The Assam cabinet on September 9 made a recommendation to the Centre to withdraw the Act completely from the state from October 1. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said the state cabinet came to the decision after considering the present situation in the state.
AFSPA was imposed in various areas of Assam in 1990 and last year the Union home ministry, due to improved law and order situation, removed it from all the areas, except some districts. At present, Presently, AFSPA remains in force in eight districts of Assam — Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
The DGP said the presence of a few black sheep in the force of 72,000 strength does not mean the whole force is bad. “Stern action will be initiated against whoever is found guilty,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention that the CID of Assam Police arrested 10 people, of which five are police personnel, in connection with an extortion case in Bajali district. The arrested police personnel included the former superintendent of police Siddhartha Buragohain and his deputy Puskal Gogoi.
On the other hand, one additional SP of Charaideo district was suspended and arrested for allegedly physically assaulting her domestic help in the district.
