Increase Surveillance, Residents Urge Police | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The residents of ward 47 at Rathinapuri are scared of the safety of them and their valuables following the recent spate of house break-ins and chain snatching incidents during the day and night.
On Wednesday, hundreds of the residents gathered in front of Rathinapuri police station and submitted a petition, urging them to step up surveillance and ensure their safety.
Ward 47 houses around 5,000 families spread across GPM Nagar, Muthukumar Nagar, PM Samy Colony, Viswanathapuram and Lakshmipuram.
“In the past two weeks, miscreants broke into 13 houses and eight of them were successful attempts. Two days ago, a chain snatching attempt was made when a woman was taking a stroll on a street at GPM Nagar,” ward councillor R Prabhakaran told TOI.
On Tuesday, miscreants broke into a locked house in broad daylight at GPM Nagar and decamped with gold ornaments weighing 15 sovereigns, he said.
“Such incidents raise the question of the safety of women, children and elderly. We are not only scared of sleeping at night but even walking alone on the streets during the day. The area is located in the heart of the city and a stone’s throw away from the bustling streets of Gandhipuram. Police should intervene and step up surveillance,” the petitioners said.
Prabhakaran said police had stopped night patrolling in the area more than a year ago. “We have asked them to beef up security and patrol the streets at night to curb crimes.”
