JAIPUR: A 60-year-old patient, who had gone to undergo cataract operation at the city’s Satellite Hospital on the MD Road was rushed to the SMS Hospital in a critical condition late Tuesday night.
With no-ICU facility, the doctors at Satellite Hospital had to contact SMS Hospital to save the patient’s life. In TOI’s September 11 edition news report‘With no ICU & no labour room, Satellite Hospital in Jaipur is a far cry from claims’ had highlighted the pathetic healthcare facilities of Satellite Hospital, which conducted surgeries without ICU facilities.
“He was brought to the hospital in a critical condition as he suffered from oculocardiac reflex during cataract surgery. Currently, he is having seizures even after triple antiepileptics,” said a senior SMS hospital official.
At the time of giving anaesthesia in the eye (known as block), the patient suffered from oculocardiac reflex, which is defined by a decrease in heart rate following the exertion of the eye pressure due to use of block, a type of regional anesthetic nerve block used in intraocular surgery.
The collapse of the patient worried the doctors. They gave CPR for reviving the patient and started preparation to shift the patients to SMS Hospital, as ICU was not available in the hospital.
