Power Generation Begins At Metro Station Towards Iit To Naubasta | Kanpur News – Times of India

Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has achieved another milestone. Moving towards the goal of energy conservation and energy efficiency, power generation has started from the solar plant installed at the Depot of Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta) under the Kanpur Metro Project.
The work of installation of solar panels had started in the metro depot located at Gurudev Chauraha in May this year. Electricity generation from this 1 MW plant, which has capacity to produce approximately 10 lakh 80 thousand units of electricity annually, has now begun.
The plant, which covers about 10,000 square meters on the roof of the Operation Control Center (OCC) building, has 3000 solar panels installed. Power generation by the plant will help reduce carbon emissions by about 770 metric tons annually, which is equivalent to planting about 8900 trees, UPMRC told TOI.
Not only this, it will also help in reducing metro’s bill on purchasing electricity and it is estimated that there will be a saving of about Rs 1 crore annually.
In the coming times, there is a plan to install solar panels on the roofs of the two receiving sub-stations of Kanpur metro and all the 19 elevated metro stations of both corridors, which will open way for saving huge amounts of money and electricity.
UPMRC informed that whatever electricity is produced from the solar plant will be fed back into the installed system. In such a case, the power units fed back by the metro system will be deducted from the total power units used in the regular bill and Kanpur metro will have to pay the power bill for the remaining units. This way, both energy and money will be saved.
The factor of environmental protection is a key aspect in the development of metro projects as they operate with zero carbon emission and are more eco-friendly as compared to other modes of public transport.
The use of regenerative braking technology in metro trains and lifts to generate and conserve energy through braking, the use of an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system to control the air conditioning in metro trains and 100 per cent LED lighting in the entire metro, are excellent examples of UPMRC’s commitment to environmental protection.
Recognizing the important contribution of Kanpur metro in this area, all nine metro stations of Priority Corridor (IIT-Motijheel) of Kanpur metro have been awarded Platinum Rating by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Apart from this, the Priority Corridor (IIT-Motijheel) of Kanpur metro has also received an ISO 14001 certificate for environment management.
