THANE: Two people died after a ground-plus-three-storey residential building — tagged as “dangerous” by the authorities — collapsed in Dombivli area of Maharashtra‘s Thane district on Friday.
Fifty-eight-year old Sunil Lodiya, who was rescued from the debris, died during treatment at Shastri Nagar hospital.
Sunil’s wife who was also trapped has been rescued and taken to the hospital.
One more person who was rescued from the debris was declared dead by the doctors Shastri Nagar hospital.
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) was evacuating residents from the Adi Narayan building when a portion of it collapsed.
The incident took place on Friday at 5pm.
The rescue operation was later called off, said Sachin Dubey, the team officer of Thane Disaster Response Force.
KDMC commissioner Bhausaheb Dangade said that the building was in dangerous condition and on Friday KDMC officials had vacated its residents while two persons were inside when a portion of it collapsed.
The KDMC’s fire brigade team and Thane’s Disaster Response Force team were also involved in the rescue operation.
