Hubballi: Residents of Bairidevarkoppa and surrounding areas of Hubballi are facing problems due to lack of graveyards. The area falls under Ward no. 35. The residents have been performing funeral rites on the land belonging to farmers for many years, but the authorities concerned have failed to provide land for the graveyard.
The people are suffering a lot in the absence of a graveyard, and conditions are still worse during the rainy season. They are demanding the authorities to provide a graveyard in the village, but it has not been fulfilled yet.
According to sources, the area is located near AMPC, about 10km from the centre of the city. The residents have been living here for 40 years and nearly 20,000 families are living in this area, they are facing a major problem. The residents are performing funeral rites on private land without proper basic facilities like shelter, water, or enough space to bury or cremate bodies according to the rituals of their caste and religion. However, the residents have been urging the district administration and HDMC authorities to sanction land for graveyard, for the past few years but no action has been taken yet.
Maruti Belgaonkarm from Bairidevarkoppa told TOI: “We are now performing last rites on a private land. As we are facing many problems, we have requested the government to provide land for the graveyard. The village accountant also visited our village and inspected. He wrote a letter to the government that there is no government land in the village that can be developed as a graveyard. However, the government did not carry out the land inspection seriously and submitted the report in a hurry. If there is no government land available in our village, let them find it in places nearby, which is convenient for villagers.”
He said: “Farmers of our village have provided land for APMC. However, we are not getting land for the graveyard. We have one lake, which is in a bad shape. So it can be converted into a graveyard.”
Resident Shrishail M said: “We are facing numerous problems while conducting the last rites of our near and dear ones in the absence of a graveyard. The government should provide land for the graveyard as soon as possible. We have requested it several times in this regard.”
HDMC Ward no. 35 corporator Mallikarjun Gundur said he wrote a letter to Hubballi tahsildar seeking sanctioning of land for the graveyard. “I will speak to the HDMC commissioner to discuss this issue and also take measures to bring pressure on the government to sanction the land for graveyard for the convenience of villagers,” he said.
