Thiruvananthapuram: Health minister Veena George has warned of a dengue spread in the state in the wake of the intermittent rains. In a statement issued on Friday, the minister said in 2013 and 2017 the state had witnessed a dengue outbreak due to the intermittent rains. The state is facing a similar situation now, she said.
The minister said since enough precautionary measures were taken this time, the cases have not been increased alarmingly as of now. But still there is a threat for a spread if adequate precautionary measures are not continued.
Necessary measures should be taken to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes in the households and public places. The source-level reduction of the mosquitoes is the key to prevent the dengue spread, the minister said.
The health department with the support of local bodies and other non governmental organizations is engaged in the source reduction activities. The minister urged all the people to ensure a clear and hygienic environment in the households and surroundings to prevent the dengue spread.
George said strict instructions have been given to all the private hospitals to report to the local district health administration if there is any increase in the number of fever cases. A treatment protocol has been issued which has to be followed by everyone, including the private hospitals, she added. Of the 10,177 dengue cases reported in the state this year, 38 patients have lost their lives. In September 1,147 cases and three deaths were reported.
