Vadodara: A Gorwa-based family was in for a shock on Friday when they reached the state-run SSG Hospital to collect the body of their septuagenarian relative. They realised that the body had already been cremated by another family
Filled with anger, the family who came to collect Nityanand Gupta’s body, created ruckus at the hospital, demanding a thorough probe. Authorities have constituted a five-member committee to probe the gross negligence.
“My father-in-law was having chest pain on Thursday. We rushed him to Gotri hospital but before he could be treated there, he passed away. From Gotri hospital, we had brought his body to SSG Hospital for postmortem to ascertain the cause of the death. Later, we kept the body in the cold storage of SSGH so that we could carry out the cremation on Friday,” said Gupta’s son-in-law Sameer Shah.
But on Friday when Shah reached the hospital to collect the body, it was missing.
“Hospital authorities had handed over the body to another family which had already completed the final rites,” Shah said, threatening to lodge a police complaint.
Gupta’s body was cremated by a Makarpura-based family who had brought the body of Parimal Dave to the hospital for postmortem. Instead of Dave’s body, Gupta’s body was handed over to the Makarpura-based family.
“It is certainly a human error. We have formed a high-level committee of senior members who will look into the entire mishap of the body being erroneously handed over to relatives of other deceased person. All those who are responsible for this will be dealt with as per prevailing rules,” said Dr Ranjan Aiyer, medical superintendent of SSG Hospital.
“Once the postmortem is done, the body is handed over to the family of the deceased person after verification by the police and our hospital staff,” he said, adding that it is not just class four employees of SSG Hospital who are accountable but there is also negligence of not reading the tag that is applied on the body.
Later, Gupta’s relatives collected his ‘asthi’ from Dave family.
