Bokaro: Frequent rain for the past few days has increased the water level in Tenughat Dam to 854.55 feet.
The authorities on Friday opened two radial gates to discharge the water into the Damodar River which has raised its water level.
Residents living in the adjoining areas of the river have been put on alert.
The maximum water storage capacity of the dam is 852 feet. Whereas, 882 feet of water stagnation is considered dangerous.
Damodar enters West Bengal after travelling through various parts of the district and Dhanbad. The flood control cell, Tenughat Dam division, has informed the Dhanbad and West Bengal administration about the water discharge.
An officer of Tenughat Dam Division said the district administration and management of the industrial establishments situated on the banks of the Damodar river were alerted before opening the dam gates.
He said water is being discharged at a speed of 6,751 cusecs per second from the opened gates which has contributed to the rise in water flow in the Damodar River.
There are a total of 18 gates in the Tenughat Dam, including 10 radial and eight under-sluice gates. Therefore, water is stored at 852 feet only.

More water released from Kadana dam
Villages along the Mahi river in Mahisagar and Panchmahal districts were put on alert as more water was released from the Kadana dam. Around 1.5 lakh cusecs of water was released due to the inflow into the dam. Villages in the affected areas were advised to exercise caution near the river. In other news, several dams in Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have been opened to release excess water, while heavy rainfall in Nashik has increased water levels in 24 dams. Tamil Nadu plans to continue releasing water from the Mettur reservoir despite Karnataka’s refusal.
Villages along the Mahi river in Mahisagar and Panchmahal districts were put on alert as more water was released from the Kadana dam. Around 1.5 lakh cusecs of water was released due to the inflow into the dam. Villages in the affected areas were advised to exercise caution near the river. Congress leader Jay Narayan Vyas criticized the mismanagement of water release from the Sardar Sarovar dam, blaming it for severe flooding and damage to property and crops. However, the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) stated that effective water management prevented losses downstream. Vyas claimed that rain started on September 6, but water release should have begun on the 14th or 15th. The dam has reached its full reservoir level, resulting in the opening of 23 sluice gates and the relocation of people along the Narmada river banks due to heavy rainfall.
