PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said that 13 seats will be reserved in the Goa legislative assembly for women as per the provisions of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women’s Reservation Bill). He said that the bill will go a long way in empowering women. It will pave the way for more women to enter Parliament, the CM said.
“I welcome the one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Thirteen seats will be reserved in Goa and this is a good step for women,” he said.
Sawant said that it was important for women to enter politics and play a role in the country’s upliftment.
The CM did not say when the reservation for women in the state legislative assembly will be notified.
A day earlier, BJP MLA Delilah Lobo said that in all likelihood the 33% reservation for women would be applicable for the 2027 Goa assembly elections. However, this depends on completion of the Census and delimitation work before 2027 and the notification of the reservation before the polls.
Sawant, who returned from Delhi and Rajasthan, said that BJP is the frontrunner for winning the upcoming assembly elections.
He also said that the Janata Dal (S) decision to join the BJP-led NDA will strengthen the alliance “not only in Karnataka but also in entire south India”.
JD(S), a one-time ally of the Congress in Karnataka, announced that it would ally with BJP. Former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy met with Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP national president J P Nadda on Friday.
Sawant said that with the entry of JD(S), NDA will win all the Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka in 2024.
A day earlier, Sawant’s wife Sulakshana had also praised the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and described it as the start of a new era in the country.
