GURGAON: The Dwarka Expressway is yet to be opened for traffic, but the roads leading to it aren’t in any good shape either.
Most of the approach roads have developed cracks and rough patches, particularly the one between sectors 83-36A and 84-36A. While the potholes are waterlogged after a bout of rain, the movement of trucks and heavy vehicles makes things worse. So, there are frequent snarls at Dadi Sati Chowk on Rampura-Pataudi Road and at the intersection of sectors 84-85 and 88-89.
Around 3km-long stretch connecting Dwarka Expressway and Kherki Daula was originally part of the expressway but later due to a change in alignment, the stretch was left out.
“There are huge craters that damage our cars. Senior citizens have met with accidents too. They fell off their scooters and injured themselves while negotiating with potholes. Frequent bottleneck on Dadi Sati Chowk and intersection of sectors 84-85 and 88-89 is a double whammy for commuters. It seems like the GMDA is not bothered by our grievances despite lodging several complaints on CM Window,” said Puran Singh, RWA president of SS Coralwood.
Last week, TOI reported on frequent traffic snarls at Dadi Sati Chowk due to delays in the construction of slip roads. Pending land acquisition coupled with poor design and lack of traffic management is creating traffic mayhem here.
After demanding reconstruction of the road connecting sectors 83 and 84 with Dwarka Expressway for the last three years, Dinesh Garg, vice president of Gurgaon One, alleged that the concerned authorities are not paying heed to their plight.
“Travelling on this road is a dangerous affair but we are compelled to use it. During rains, it is difficult to wade through waterlogged potholes as some are 2ft deep. Moreover, due to the absence of traffic police and signals, there is always chaos at both the key junctions,” Garg said.
When contacted, the senior GMDA official conceded that the left-out pocket of Dwarka Expressway is beyond repair due to heavy movement of traffic and severe waterlogging. “Although the detailed project report is under preparation, we are awaiting the opening of Dwarka Expressway so that we can have more clarity over the traffic pattern. Meanwhile, we have been carrying out extensive patchwork regularly on other roads of new sectors,” the official added.

No slip roads, potholed patches: Stretch bypassing Kherki toll turns a chokepoint
The roundabout on Rampura-Pataudi road near Dwarka Expressway in Gurgaon is causing major traffic snarls due to delays in construction of slip roads and heavy vehicle movement. The poor design of the roundabout and unpaved patches worsen the situation. The revamp of the road, which began 18 months ago, is still not complete. The Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) blames ongoing litigation for the delay, while traffic police say they can’t do anything until the road is built. Residents are demanding prompt action to address these issues.

Waterlogged roads, power outage after overnight rain
The state capital of Bhopal in India experienced heavy rainfall overnight, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Ashoka Garden and Punjabi Bagh. The stormwater drains were unable to handle the flow of water, resulting in flooded roads. Power outages also affected the city, with the MPSEB call centre remaining unresponsive. The rainfall is expected to increase water levels in the Upper Lake, which supplies around 40% of the city’s water needs. The lack of stormwater drains and worsening road conditions were further highlighted by the heavy rain.
