Mandya: The Mandya ‘bandh’ on Saturday, called by farmer groups to urge the state government not to release Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu, was by and large peaceful and total, barring some reports of traffic snarls.
While many shops and commercial establishments remained closed, private buses and autorickshaws stayed off the roads as activists of various Kannada organisations and farmer bodies staged demonstrations in different parts of Mandya.
While banks remained closed owing to a scheduled non-banking day on Saturday, many private educational institutions had declared a holiday. Several students from different colleges also joined the protesters at Sanjay Circle and formed a human chain.
Mandya District Farmers’ Struggle Committee leader Sunanda Jayaram claimed that people closed their shops and business establishments voluntarily in support of the bandh. “Overall, the call for ‘bandh’ elicited a good response,” she claimed.
In Maddur, where shops and business establishments also remained closed, Kannada activists took out a bike rally in the town. Police in Mandya had beefed up security across the district to prevent any untoward incident. A platoon of Rapid Action Force was stationed in Mandya town as a precautionary measure.
