BENGALURU: Close on the heels of cooperation minister KN Rajanna suggesting the appointment of three more deputy chief ministers, Congress MLA Basavaraj Rayareddi, who is also a Siddaramaiah loyalist, on Saturday sought four more such posts.
Rayareddi, who was a minister in the previous regime of Siddaramaiah, said the government is holding discussions on his proposal in this regard, with some ministers already coming out in favour of it.
As of now, Siddaramaiah has only one deputy in DK Shivakumar. However, Rayareddi said the government is seriously considering bringing in more ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections. Rayareddi, however, clarified that the creation of four more DyCM posts is not aimed at weakening Shivakumar’s position. “My proposal is not against Shivakumar. He is a good organiser. Let him become principal DyCM. Let the others be called his subordinates. In my opinion, a total of five DyCM posts will benefit the party in the upcoming polls,” he said.
Shivakumar belongs to the Vokkaliga community, and similar opportunities should be given to candidates belonging to Lingayat, Muslim, or Dalit communities, the MLA said. “If this is done, all communities will support the Congress,” said Rayareddi.
He also claimed that the Congress government in the state would become unstable if it wins fewer seats than the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the LS polls.
At the same time, Rayareddi expressed confidence Siddaramaiah would remain CM for five years. “He has been made CM for the full term. He can resign from the post as per his wish. But the high command, while making him CM, had clearly stated he has been made CM for the full term,” he added, rubbishing talk of Siddaramaiah’s stint being restricted to 2.5 years.
Rajanna and Rayareddi’s statements have created furore within the Congress. Rajanna had earlier stated that if three posts of DyCM are not created, the state government would become “unstable”. He later clarified that it was wrong to interpret that Siddaramaiah had prompted him to make this statement.
