Ludhiana: Even as the windy and rainy Saturday morning eased humidity, it caused problems for residents. The sky darkened around 7am and it started raining, due to which school children had a tough time. Waterlogging on streets compounded the problems.
Worst affected areas included Hambran road, Haibowal, Panj Peer Road, Chandigarh Road, Model Town, Ferozepur Road, Sarabha Nagar, Rishi Nagar, Chander Nagar, Civil city, clock tower, Janta Nagar, Dholewal, Janakpuri, Chaura Bazaar, Jalandhar bypass road etc. In a few areas, tree branches and whole trees fell on the road. Residents of BRS Nagar shared pictures of a large tree which fell on Lodhi Club road and blocked one side for traffic movement.
With mid-term exams going on in many schools, students could not afford to stay absent. Many people who went out to drop their children to school ended up being drenched and stuck in traffic jams. Water accumulated on roadsides, forcing vehicles in the middle and causing traffic jams. Two-wheeler riders had it especially tough as fast moving cars splashed water on them.
Suresh Jain, a commuter who was stuck in a traffic jam at Hambran Road said, “Officials make tall claims of solving the issue of waterlogging in the city but they have failed miserably. Water from Kitchlu Nagar and adjoining areas gets accumulated at Hambran Road. Water pools on the road after only half an hour of rainfall.”
The timing of the rain caught people off guard, as they were just setting out for work. Haibowal resident Sunita Gupta, teacher in a private school, said, “It was a tough task to reach school on time on Saturday as it started raining heavily just when we were about to leave. Roads in the area are potholed and it is risky to drive.” She blamed authorities for not being able to solve basic problems of the city. An MC official attributed the waterlogging to heavy rain and said the rainwater drained out in three hours. tnn

Approach road for Aavin Nagar in offing
Residents of Aavin Nagar, Jubilee Town, Marudhu Pandiyan Nagar, and Melamadai in Madurai may soon have an alternative approach road. Commercial taxes minister P Moorthy has announced plans for a new road along the surplus channel of Vandiyur tank. Currently, these areas rely on a narrow residential road, causing inconvenience. The proposed road would run along the Vandiyur bund and Melamadai sluice, with permission from the Public Works Department (PWD) required for construction. Waterlogged roads, power outage after overnight rain
Heavy overnight rainfall in Bhopal caused waterlogging and power outages, impacting normal life in the low-lying areas of the city. Ashoka Garden and Punjabi Bagh were the worst affected. The stormwater drains were unable to cope with the flow of water, leading to flooded roads. Power outages continued throughout the day, with the MPSEB call centre remaining unresponsive. The rainfall is expected to increase water levels in the Upper Lake, which supplies 40% of the city’s water needs. The lack of stormwater drains and deteriorating road conditions were also highlighted.
