Coimbatore: Union minister for youth affairs and sports Anurag Thakur on Saturday said the Isha Gramotsavam had become an effective tool for social transformation by breaking caste barriers in the society, empowering women and reviving the resilient rural spirit. He was speaking at the finale of Isha Gramotsavam at the Isha Yoga Centre here on the day.
The sporting extravaganza which began August was held across the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala, besides the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The events were held at more than 194 rural locations with 60,000 players, including 10,000 rural women, participating in sports like kabaddi and throwball.
Launched by Sadhguru in 2004, the social initiative is aimed at bringing the spirit of sports and playfulness into the lives of rural people.
Thakur said, “The initiative celebrates rural sports and culture like none other. The Isha Gramotsavam was started in 2004 with the aim of bringing health, prosperity and well-being to the rural masses. I can see the sports persons here, who work as labourers, agriculturalists and fishermen, and the competitive spirit in them.”
Sadhguru said celebration was the basis of life and it was possible only when one is playful. “So, it’s fantastic to see more than 60,000 players and thousands of spectators from across 25,000 villages participate in the event.”
The Union minister was accompanied by Sadhguru, founder of Isha Foundation, actor Santhanam and former Indian hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay.

India’s Union sports minister, Anurag Thakur, has cancelled his visit to China for the 19th Asian Games after Chinese authorities denied accreditation and entry to three sportspersons from Arunachal Pradesh. The Ministry of External Affairs has lodged a strong protest against China’s selective obstruction of Indian athletes and has stated that India firmly rejects differential treatment based on domicile or ethnicity. The Indian wushu team had faced a similar issue in July when three athletes were issued stapled visas instead of pasted visas.
