NOIDA: The toll from the September 15 collapse of a construction lift at the site of Amrapali Dream Valley phase 2 rose to nine on Saturday, with the death of another worker at a hospital in the city.
Eight other workers who were on the lift that crashed to the ground from the 14th floor at the construction site in Techzone 4 died within 48 hours of the tragedy – four the same day and the four more the day after.
Originally from Meerut, 20-year-old Kaif battled severe head injuries for eight days. He died around 1.10am on Saturday. “He had severe injuries in the skull and limbs when he was brought to the hospital that day. We had to put him on ventilator support as his brain had stopped responding. A team of general physicians, an orthopaedic surgeon and an anaesthesiologist was treating him. However, we could not revive him. We informed his family and handed over the body,” said Renu Agarwal, the chief medical superintendent of the hospital.
Kaif, his family members said, had joined work at the site around 4 months ago. His brother, Arbaaz – who, too, died in the accident – had followed a couple of months later.
“Like any other day, they had gone for work at the site in the morning. They boarded the construction lift because the site inspector asked them too. We lost Arbaaz last week. Now, his brother is gone too. How will we lead our lives now,” Nanhu, Kaif’s father, asked.
So far, police have made five arrests for negligence, which includes two GMs of the contractor hired by NBCC – Girdhari Lal Constructions Pvt Ltd.
