Surat: The Surat police appealed to people living in villages near Suvali, Hazira and Rajgari beaches near the city to hand over any Afghan charas in their possession to avoid prosecution under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The appeal by the cops came a day after it arrested a man for allegedly hiding 13.12 kilograms of charas worth Rs 6.56 crore that he found on a beach instead of informing authorities.
Based on a tip-off that a man was travelling on the road connecting Rajgari and Damka villages near Hazira with charas, the Surat Crime Branch team held Jitendra Patel (41) on Sunday. They recovered a total of 13 packets containing 13.12 kilograms of Afghan charas worth Rs 6.56 crore from him.
Sunday’s catch was the third case in the last two months. The Surat special operation group had earlier seized 10kg Afghan charas from Suvali beach on July 24. Later it recovered 8kg charas belonging to the same consignment from Pinkesh Patel and Abhishek Patel of Hazira village.
Surat crime branch DCP Rupal Solanki told TOI, “We got a tip-off that Jitendra Patel was searching for prospective customers to sell charas. We kept a watch and caught him. He had found the contraband from a beach near Rajgari village when he went there for fishing.”
Solanki added, “We have appealed to the villagers to hand over any contraband they might have found on the beaches to the local police, SOG or crime branch and not try to sell it. This will prevent their arrest under NDPS Act.”
When asked how such a huge quantity of charas reached Surat, a senior police official told TOI: “There are two possibilities for such seizure. First, someone might have thrown the consignment in the sea to avoid getting caught. Second, someone from the coastal village might have brought the consignment to Surat but threw it in the sea fearing arrest.”
