Vadodara: Thousands of police personnel were deployed across the city to ensure peaceful Ganesha immersion processions on Thursday. The communally sensitive areas in the old city were turned into a fortress with a large number of police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel guarding the roads.
The processions began in the evening with thousands of idols being immersed in the artificial tanks made across the city. Most idols were immersed in a huge artificial tank made in the Navlakhi compound.
“The processions were peaceful and there was no untoward incident,” said a police officer. The royal Ganesha of Gaekwads was immersed in a pool next to Laxmi Vilas Palace.
Late in the evening, personnel from the city police, CRPF and SRPF were seen patrolling on foot. Drones and policemen fitted with body-worn cameras recorded all happenings.
While the devotees danced to the music in the processions, heavy rain greeted them late in the night.

The Water Resources Department and the city corporation in Madurai have started closing a pit dug in the Vaigai River used for immersing Ganesha idols. The pit, which posed a danger to residents and attracted cattle, will be closed by Thursday. The city police had deployed officers to guard the pit, and residents had urged the City Corporation to close it down. In another news, rail enthusiasts are concerned about the closure of a century-old pit line at the Ooty heritage railway station for development work. The pit line is used for servicing engines and brakes.
