Coimbatore: In a freak accident, legs of a contract corporation worker were crushed in a giant machine used for shredding garbage at Vellalore dump yard here on Thursday.
Fellow workers switched off the machine, rescued the victim – identified as Sathya, 23, of Konavaikalpalayam – and sent him to hospital. Doctors said he has lost both his legs from the thighs.
While rumours initially had it that the fellow workers switched on the machine without knowing that Sathya was inside it, police said there was power cut when he got inside and the machine resumed functioning when the power supply returned.
“The victim was not aware that the machine was not functioning because of the power cut. He presumed that it was switched off. But when he got inside and started cleaning the shredder blades, power supply resumed and the machine started running,” said a police officer.
Police said the giant machine was used to shred non-biodegradable materials. “Sathya was cleaning the rotor blades of the shredder standing atop the rotor around 10.30am, when it started rolling. Even as Sathya screamed, the rotor began dragging Sathya’s legs inside, crushing them. However, within seconds, the machine was stopped by the fellow workers, who heard his cries.”
The fellow workers immediately informed the ambulance as well as the firefighters, who were stationed at the yard. They rushed to the spot and rescued Sathya from the machine. He was taken to a private hospital. Doctors said his condition was critical.
On any given day, tonnes of garbage from across the city is being brought to Vellalore dump yard, where it is treated with the help of multiple machineries. The workers said the working conditions in the yard deserved improvement and there were several safety concerns for them.
The Podanur police have, meanwhile, registered a case and launched a probe into the incident.
