Prayagraj: At a time when entire Sangam city is being decked up for Maha Kumbh-2025, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to spruce up 20 localities that have been reeling under various civic problems for the past many years. These localities will be made ‘Smart’ before the mega religious event.
Officials said ten localities within the city and five each across the Ganga and Yamuna have been included under the project. This includes localities like Daraganj, Allapur, Salori, Shivkuti, Rasulabad, Gaughat, Arail, Chhatnag etc.
The civic body has started preparing the list of work that will be done under the initiative, funds for which will be allocated from the 15th financial account of PMC.
Many of these localities are those which have a close association with famous litterateurs, martyrs and freedom fighters. The numbers of the houses in the ‘Smart Mohallas’ will be sequential.
Apart from this, the walls along the streets and roads will painted in one colour and bear information about litterateurs and selected personalities of the city.
Besides, there will be no overhead or open power lines as all wires and cables will be moved underground. CCTV cameras will be installed to monitor the activities of the localities. Additional funds will be made available for sewer line, drinking water, roads, streetlights and open-air gyms.
These localities will also be made free of stray cattle. Legal action will be taken against those rearing cattle or leaving them unattended on roads. Along with this, the municipal corporation is mulling auctioning the stray cattle caught on roads. This will be done so that there is no filth on the roads and locals don’t face any inconveniences in commuting.
Likewise, the drinking water system will be improved in these smart localities. The old drinking water pipeline will be replaced and new tubewells will be installed.
“Continuous efforts are being made to provide better facilities to the locals and after these localities become smart, people will get convenience in all respect,” said municipal commissioner Chandramohan Garg.

Local leaders are advocating for a local candidate, while others argue that a local candidate would have better access to voters. However, the Congress party lacks a strong cadre in the Cantonment. Local body can lease civic amenity site, not auction it
The Dharwad bench of the high court in Karnataka ruled that a deputy commissioner does not have the authority to auction a civic amenity site. The court noted that local authorities are only custodians of such sites and that outright sale of these sites is not allowed. The court’s decision aligns with broader urban development goals and preserves the purpose of reserving specific places in developed layouts. The ruling came in response to a petition filed by a businessman challenging the auction of a civic amenity site in his layout.
