CHANDIGARH: Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was on Thursday arrested in an early morning Punjab Police swoop-down at his Chandigarh residence in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case registered against him at Jalalabad in Fazilka district of Punjab in 2015.
Khaira alleged that he was arrested in a false case in which the Supreme Court had already quashed the summons issued against him. “I am being hounded because I have been strongly opposing and exposing the Bhagwant Mann government and the chief minister is carrying out personal vendetta against me,” he said.
The case pertains to a trans-border heroin smuggling racket in which eight persons were arrested and 2 kg heroin, 2 Pakistani SIM cards, 1 Pakistani mobile phone, 24 gold biscuits and two small firearms were seized.
The primary accusations against Khaira are that he was supporting an international gang of smugglers, sheltering them, and receiving financial benefits from drug traffickers.
According to the investigation agency’s charge sheet, the funds received were allegedly used to purchase properties. Between 2014 and 2020, Khaira reportedly spent over 6.5 crore on himself and his family members, with expenses exceeding his declared income.
