Surat: The Bharuch Jilla Khedut Samaj and the Brackish Water Research Centre submitted a memorandum to the chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday demanding compensation for the recent flood disaster from the funds of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) and not from taxpayers’ money.
Submitting their memorandum to the Bharuch collector office on Friday, the farmers said that the SSNNL is a registered company that makes profit by issuing bonds. It should, therefore, be helping in paying compensation for the massive flood damages.
Activists and farmers also demanded handing over the operation of the dam to the engineers instead of the SSNNL company.
MSH Shaikh, president of Brackish Water Research Centre told TOI, “The SSNNL has been administering the dam operation as a company instead of the state’s irrigation department. As it is a company and not the technical department that can understand floods, it should be dissolved and the administration handed over to the technical persons.”
He further said that the floods were a mistake on part of the SSNNL authorities and not the government. “So, why should the government pay assistance making it look like a natural disaster. It is totally a man-made disaster created by the SSNNL and its directors. All directors should resign accepting their huge mistake,” Shaikh demanded.
Bharuch Jilla Khedut Samaj also submitted a memorandum stating that the SSNNL gives profit to investors through Shrinidhi Fix Deposits and bonds. “It should, therefore, bear the responsibility like any other company. The SSNNL should pay farmers Rs 50,000 per hectare for crop loss. In this man-made floods, Rs 1 lakh compensation must paid for buffalo, Rs 60,000 for cow, Rs 20,000 for calf and Rs 10,000 for goat and sheep,” it reads.
As the farmers are unable to fill online compensation applications, it should be done by the local talatis and other officials. The SSNNL should also give compensation for farming vehicles, machineries, fertilizers among other things, both organizations unanimously demanded.
