Vadodara: A mob chased a tribal youth and also entered into a scuffle with him during a Ganpati procession in Ghoghamba in Panchmahal district on Thursday.
The youth was rescued by the police and an offence was registered against the mob at the Rajgadh police station even as shops in Ghoghamba remained closed on Friday.
A video of the incident went viral on social media along with a message stating that such incidents could not be tolerated. The youth, who was rushed for treatment on Thursday, filed an offence regarding the incident later.
According to Rajgadh police sub-inspector J B Jhala, an offence was registered regarding the incident at the police station and investigations were now being conducted by the deputy superintendent of police (SC/ST Cell). He said that the offence mentioned around 15 persons by name including the sarpanch of a village.
The youth was passing by the police station road when the incident took place on Thursday.
According to a police official, a Ganpati immersion procession was passing on the road at that time and was creating a traffic jam. The youth confronted the deputy executive magistrate who was present there about the traffic chaos.
“Members of the procession heard this and got infuriated. They tried to beat him up and chased him. However, the policemen present at the place took him away and ensured that he was safe,” said an official.
The youth is also a member of the Adivasi Yuva Samiti which is active in Ghoghamba taluka. The youth was initially taken to the Ghoghamba referral hospital for treatment and was later shifted to Godhra.
Sources said that the shops remained closed on Friday in wake of the offence even as villagers were claiming that people were wrongly implicated in the offence registered by the youth.
Panchmahal superintendent of police Himanshu Solanki said that the shops had opened after remaining closed for two to three hours. “The Ganpati procession had both tribal and non-tribal participants. After the incident, persons from both sides have also reached a compromise and ensured that no escalation of the issue takes place,” he added.
