Udhagamandalam: Eight tourists from Tenkasi were killed when their bus fell into a gorge near the ninth hairpin bend near Marapalam on the Ooty-Mettupalayam ghat road on Saturday.
Police said the driver lost control while driving downhill as the brakes failed and the bus fell into a 50-foot gorge. The road was slippery as it had rained all day and visibility had been affected by thick mist, police said.
A group of 57 people from Tenkasi had come to Ooty and Coonoor on a day’s trip on Saturday morning. The accident happened when they were returning home in the evening.
Fire and rescue service personnel and police rushed to the spot and used ropes and stretchers to pull up passengers to the road. All the rescued passengers were taken to the Coonoor Government Lawley Hospital.
Eight passengers were declared dead by doctors at the hospital, while four are in a serious condition. The deceased were identified as V. Nithin, 15, S. Babykala, 36, S. Murugesan, 65, P. Muppidathy, 67, R. Kowsalya, 29, Devikala, 42, Jaya, 50, and Thangam 64. All were from Kadayam in Tenkasi.
Nilgiris collector M Aruna and senior police officials supervised the rescue and relief operations.
A case has been registered with the Coonoor town police station. Inquiry is underway, added the police.

The injured are being treated at the Coonoor Government Lawley Hospital. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has expressed condolences and instructed the tourism minister to oversee the rescue operation and provide special treatment to the injured.

Governor R N Ravi of Chennai will be conducting a two-day tour of Tenkasi and Virudhunagar districts to interact with the public. This will be the first time he is taking such a tour since his appointment as governor. During the tour, he will engage with farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, traditional pot makers, children, people of Vishwakarma association, and entrepreneurs. Normally, the governor interacts with the public at the Raj Bhavan, but this tour allows for direct interaction with various groups of people.
