Bhubaneswar: As cybercrime emerges as a big threat, chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday advised people to take adequate precautions and not fall prey to online criminals. Launching a 15-day statewide awareness campaign, he flagged off 34 vehicles that would sensitise people on cyber security.
“Cybercrimes have increased across the country, including Odisha. Awareness and precautions can curb online crimes to a large extent. The campaign is aimed at making people aware of cyber threats. Everyone should remain extremely aware and careful,” Naveen said in a written statement.
Police said the cyber safety raths would play audio-video messages in bus stands, markets, local haats, block and panchayat offices, and other places of public gathering. Door-to-door household outreach programmes will be executed during the fortnight by Mission Shakti members, anganwadi workers and accredited social health activists (ASHA) in blocks.
According to the plan, professionals from IT companies based in Bhubaneswar might participate in the awareness campaigns in their home districts. Students and professionals have been requested to register themselves as cyber volunteer digitally. Online competition for best cyber safety message template, video and best cyber safety picture collage would be conducted in districts from October 2 to 11.
As children tend to be more vulnerable to cybercrimes, police have asked investigators to deal with such sensitive cases with empathy. To enable investigating officers to properly probe online crimes against children, Odisha police in collaboration with Unicef recently conducted a training programme for them.
