Belagavi: Condemning the sending of threat letters to more than 60 progressive thinkers in the state, various Dalit organisations have given Gokak bandh call on October 5.
Speaking to mediapersons at Gokak on Saturday, Ramesh Madar, Karnataka Dalit Samiti state organising coordinator, said there have been many instances of sending of threat letters to ministers, progressive thinkers, writers and actors in the state.
“In the letters, names of many progressives, thinkers, writers, actors and ministers have been mentioned, and life threats have been issued. Nijagunanand Swami of Bailur Mutt, writers SG Siddaramaiah, K Marulasiddappa, Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Bhaskar Prasad, prof Bhagwan, prof Mahesh Chandra, BT Lalita Nayak, actors Chetan, actor Prakash Raj, Dwarkanath, Devanur Mahadeppa, BL Venu are among those threatened. Sixty-one people, including ministers Satish Jarakiholi, Priyank Kharge and Dinesh Gundurao, were threatened,” he said.
“A man has already been taken into police custody in Davangere for writing such letters. Gokak will observe bandh on October 5 to urge the government to take stringent measures to check such acts,” he said. tnn

SC said damages can be recovered from organisers of bandh: Bengaluru top cop
The Bengaluru City police commissioner has declared that the authorities will not permit the bandh (general strike) called by pro-Kannada activists to protest the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Prohibitory orders have been imposed across the city for 24 hours, but protests will be allowed inside Freedom Park. The commissioner stated that bandhs are illegal and unconstitutional, and the organisers will be held responsible for any damages caused during the protests. Over 800 men have already been detained under preventive custody in anticipation of the bandh.
