BAREILLY: A 70-year-old woman, who earned a living by sharpening kitchen knives in Shahjahanpur district, was allegedly beaten to death by a customer over Rs 10 on Monday, police said.
The incident was reported from Saraisadho village under Jalalabad police station limits. According to Savitri Devi’s family, she asked Rs 30 for the job but the accused, Rajit Kumar (in his late 20s), was ready to give her only Rs 20. An argument ensued over payment which took an ugly turn and Kumar thrashed her with a stick.
Local villagers took Savitri to the police station and then to a hospital where she succumbed to injuries later in the evening.
Meanwhile, Rajit’s family claimed his elder brother Shobhit, who is mentally ill, hit the woman and “there was no dispute over money”.
SHO Jalalabad Praveen Solanki said, “We lodged a non-cognisable report (NCR). The woman died during treatment and the body has been sent for the post mortem. Though there were visible injuries on the body, we need to wait for the autopsy report to convert the NCR into an FIR under IPC section for culpable homicide. We’re also trying to find out whether the person who injured the victim was mentally ill or not.”
