GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that over 800 accused were arrested in a major crackdown on child marriage.
The development comes nearly three weeks after Sarma warned that 3,000 people will be arrested in the state for their involvement in child marriages.
“In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn,” said Sarma in a tweet.

Last month, police had detained 17 fake “qazis” (a person who solemnises Muslim marriages) in different operations in Hailakandi district of Assam.
