Drunk TN man grips Periyar statue’s left thumb for support, breaks it and gets jailed | Chennai News

TRICHY: The Perambalur police on Tuesday arrested a man for damaging the statue of social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy. According to police, the man, who was drunk, inadvertently damaged the left thumb of the statue in the early hours of Monday.
Sources said AIADMK’s Perambalur district unit had erected statues of Periyar and of former chief ministers C N Annadurai, M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa near the Perambalur bus terminus.
On Monday evening, AIADMK cadre found the thumb on the left hand of the Periyar statue broken. They resorted to a protest. Later, they lodged a police complaint.
Investigations by the Perambalur police revealed that A Anuchandiran of Kunnam in the district had damaged the statue. The man, who was drunk, was sleeping under the statue. “He lost his balance. For support, he gripped the statue’s thumb and damaged it. He abandoned his red shawl near the statue,” Perambalur DSP A Palanisamy told TOI.
Further investigations revealed that Anuchandiran had hoisted and lowered the AIADMK flag on a nearby flagpole. Locals recorded a video of the act.
The Perambalur police picked up the man from his house. He was booked under Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act 1984. He was remanded in judicial custody till October 17. Hed has been lodged in Thuraiyur sub-jail.
The damaged statue was restored to its original condition.
