Vadodara: An old house in Baranpura area of the city collapsed late on Sunday night. Nobody was injured in the incident. The house had been rented out to tenants.
The dilapidated house collapsed with a large sound but its occupants managed to come out in time. Dandiabazaar fire station personnel and other officials of Vadodara Municipal Corporation rushed to the site after being alerted about the incident.
According to an official, four or five people were present in the house when the incident took place. “First, the rear portion of the house collapsed and then the front portion came down partially. A part of the house also collapsed when we were present at the site with other officials and a corporator,” said a fire brigade official.
Sources said that the house was very old and made with mud and other materials. “It did not have any strength. Those staying in it were awake when it started falling and managed to come out in time,” said the official. The road was closed after the incident as part of the house was still in a precarious condition. Officials of Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd had to discontinue power supply in the area to ensure that no untoward incident took place.

The manager, identified as Vinoth, has been charged with causing death due to negligence. The incident occurred at the Indian Oil Petrol bunk in Saidapet, where the roof collapsed after water accumulated inside the iron sheets. Some of the injured have been discharged from the hospital, while others are still recovering. CCTV footage of the collapse has gone viral on social media.
