Varanasi: The city remembered Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversary by organising several events in the district on Monday.
The national flag was hoisted at all the government, semi-government offices and schools on the occasion and floral tributes were paid by garlanding the statues of Bapu and Shastri ji in the city on Monday.
A series of programmes including seminar, exhibition of records and photographs based on the life and journey of Mahatma Gandhi were organised at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Smriti Bhawan Museum in Ramnagar on the occasion.
At another programme held in the Commissionerate auditorium, the additional commissioner Manoj Singh, who presided over the event, highlighted the life and struggles of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. He said that people should take inspiration from these great men and pledge to work with complete honesty and transparency for public interest.
In another event, the district judge and chairman of the district legal services authority Ajay Kumar Vishwesh flagged off a cycle rally of school children as a part of the cleanliness and awareness campaign in the district court premises.
Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Banaras Hindu University. The distinguished professor of Physics department, Institute of Science Prof Yashwant Singh was present at the function. The event was presided over by the vice-chancellor Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain.
A programme was also organised at the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth. The Swachhta Pakhwada concluded with the celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s birth anniversary at the Banaras Locomotive Works on Monday. Divisional railway manager of the Varanasi division of North Eastern Railway, Vineet Kumar Srivastava and others paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri at a function organised at the Officers Club located in Lahartara area.
