KOLKATA: As the eagerly awaited Sharodotsav, the main festival of Bengal, approaches, the bustling city of Kolkata is in a frenzy of activity. With vibrant Kash flowers in full bloom across fields and artisans in Kumartuli working tirelessly, the Metro Railway has launched a special initiative to cater to the shopping rush before Puja.
This annual ritual sees Kolkata residents and suburbanites flocking to markets to purchase new clothes and other festive essentials, and this year is no exception.
In preparation for the surge in commuters, Metro authorities have meticulously planned Pre-Puja special services to ease the journey for shoppers during the pre-festival days. Traditionally, passenger congestion is observed at key Metro stations such as Mahatma Gandhi Road and Central, strategically located near the bustling Burrabazar area, the epicenter of eastern India’s business hub. Esplanade Metro station also witnesses a sharp rise in footfalls due to its proximity to New Market, a popular destination for young shoppers.
Among the favorite shopping districts, Hatibagan draws its share of eager buyers, and Shyambazar Metro station plays a crucial role in facilitating easy access to the latest fashion trends. Kalighat Metro station, situated beneath the renowned Rashbehari Crossing, has become the gateway for Gariahat-bound shoppers. Additionally, residents from Kolkata’s adjoining districts are increasingly relying on Metro services, with Dakshineswar, Dum Dum, and Kavi Subhash Metro stations serving as their gateways to the city.
Metro transportation provides a smooth, rapid, and comfortable experience for commuters, allowing them to effortlessly reach their preferred shopping destinations while saving precious time. The dedicated Metro staff has been working tirelessly to ensure uninterrupted services. Extra booking counters have been opened at all stations to manage the surge in travelers. Adequate tokens and Smart Cards are readily available to meet any increased demand.
Metro users are encouraged to make use of the ‘Metro Ride Kolkata’ app for Smart Card recharges and to book QR Code Based Tickets while traveling on the East-West Corridor. Even in the face of heavy downpours, the Metro reliably transports passengers to their destinations with comfort and grace, eliminating concerns about Kolkata’s notorious Pre-Puja traffic jams.
Commuters have expressed their satisfaction with the services, praising Metro authorities for their initiative in running additional services on weekends leading up to Puja. Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Metro Railway, expressed gratitude for the positive feedback from commuters and reassured them of the Metro’s commitment to providing a seamless journey during this festive season.
