PATNA: Hours-long talks between the union leaders representing the agitating workers of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the authorities proved inconclusive on Monday, even as their indefinite strike entered its 12th day with sanitation in the city going for a toss. Heaps of garbage have been piling up in every locality with each passing day.
On the day, the union leaders held talks with the Patna mayor, his deputy, municipal commissioner and the members of the civic body’s standing committee. “The talks are still ongoing. No consensus has been reached so far,” said Jitendra Kumar, spokesperson for the Patna Municipal Corporation Joint Employees Coordination Committee. The agitating workers are demanding regularisation of the daily-wage staff, an increase in the minimum wage to Rs 18,000 and abolition of outsourcing companies.
Municipal commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar has called the demands put forth by the striking workers “unreasonable and impractical”. The PMC revised the wages for the sanitation workers from October 1. The daily-wage workers are now being paid Rs 490 per day while sanitation supervisors are paid Rs 540/day.
Besides, the municipal officials have repeatedly been accusing the striking workers of harassing those involved in the sanitation work and damaging the public property.
