Dharwad/Hubballi/Belagavi: ‘Shramdaan’ (voluntary work), bhajan singing and special talks marked the birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri in Dharwad on Monday.
Labour Minister Santosh Lad, who is also the district minister, garlanded the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri during a function organised by the district administration at Alur Venkatrao Bhavan.
President of Gandhi Peace Foundation’s Dharwad unit Dr Sanjiv Kulkarni said Gandhian principles remain relevant at least in India’s context and there is a need to keep the younger generation informed about Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions and ideas.
Deputy commissioner Gurudatt Hegde, police commissioner Renuka Sukumar, SP Gopal Byakod and others were present.
The students of Karnatak High School celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by holding a ‘No Plastic’ campaign. At VP Hanchinamani PU College bhajan singing and elocution competition were held.
Shantalinga Shivacharya Swami of Aminabhavi Panchagruha Hiremath participating in a programme organised jointly by Siddhaveera Satsanga and Maratha Vidyaprasaraka Sangha said it is very important to follow the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri instead of just observing their birth anniversary by garlanding their portraits. Dr Nitinchandra Hattikal, MR Morey and others spoke during the event.
Gandhi and Shastri jayanti were observed at the department of Gandhian Studies, Karnatak University, KE Board’s institutions and JSS institutions. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions organised on the occasion.
In Hubballi
Various government departments, social organisations, schools and colleges in Hubballi celebrated 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 119th birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri on Monday.
Hubballi Urban tahsildar Kalagouda Patil and Rural tahsildar Prakash Nashi offered flowers to portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri at a ceremony organised bytaluk administration in Mini Vidhana Soudha.
The fifth additional district and sessions judge SB Handral said one should ensure cleanliness around him/her. Inaugurating the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ programme organised by Taluk Legal Services Committee and Hubballi Bar Association, Handral said cleanliness is the foundation of good health and we should adopt it our life to materialise Gandhi’s dream of Swachh Bharat.
At Karnataka State Law University, vice-chancellor Prof C Basavaraju spoke on the relevance of the cardinal principles of Mahatma Gandhi and how they continue to resonate and are relevant even today. Anuradha Vastrad, Registrar, Prof G B Patil, Dean and Finance Officer, Vasant Ladwa Syndicate Member, and others were present on the occasion.
Officials and staff of Union Bank of India celebrated Gandhi and Shastri Jayanti by doing Shramadan at Railway station. Regional Head TV Ramanand, Deputy Head Tejaswini VC and others participated in Shramadan. A team of citizens in Lingaraj Nagar cleaned the HDMC garden located at Shubh Bhoomi apartment to mark Gandhi and Shastri Jayanti. Educationist GV Valasang, NS Managuli, GC Hiremath, SH Patil, Nagesh Chavan, Prashant Chawadapur and others cleaned the garden.
Inaugurating the function at Adarsh PU Science College, BJP leader Lingaraj Patil said that the PM Narendra Modi himself has become a role model by involving in Shramadan and one should join in the campaign. College directors BC Goudar, SB Kunnur, Daniel Hoskeri and others were present for the Gandhi Jayanti event.
In Belagavi
Various government departments celebrated Gandhi Jayanti at Veersoudha, memorial where 39th national Congress sessionwas held in 1924 under the chairmanship of the father of the nation.
Jayanti programme of Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was held at Veerasoudha,Tilakwadi on Monday. District administration, ZP, Information & Public Relations department, Belagavi City Corporation, Department of School Education and various departments jointly conducted the event.
Inaugurating the event, MLA Asif (Raju) Seth said the path of Mahatma Gandhi, who preached truth, peace and non-violence is only the way to the world to follow now. All of us should learn from Lal Bahadur Shastriji’s simple life who declared “Jai Jawan-Jai Kisan ”.
Legislative council member Nagaraj Yadav said there is a need for a Mahatma Gandhi study centre in the district. ZP CEO Harshal Bhoyer, Superintendent of Police Dr. Bhima Shankar Guled, Prof. Gangadharaiah from Rani Channamma University spoke. Vinayak More and his team and Indian Seva Dal, school children presented bhajans. Freedom fighters Rajendra Kalaghatagi and others were honoured.
Gurunath Kadabur, deputy mayor Reshma Patil, DCP Rohan, DC of Corporation Bhagyashree Huggi, superintending engineer Lakshmi Nippanikar and members of Corporation were present.
