Berhampur: Police on Monday arrested a 46-year-old man for killing his 80-year-old mother and cremating her body inside his house in the wee hours of Sunday in Kandhamal district.
Ironically, Sunday was the International Day for Older Persons.
Tikabali police said Samir Pradhan, a resident of Badimunda Khajurisahi, was released from jail on September 23 after serving a three-year term for attacking his neighbour.
“Pradhan killed his mother Manjula Nayak and set her body ablaze. The house and the body were reduced to ashes,” said Kalyanimayee Sendha, IIC, Tikabali police station. “We have recovered some bones from the gutted house and have sent them to MKCG Medical College for examination,” said Sendha.
No other family member was in the house. Pradhan’s wife and son live separately ever since he was jailed, said police. Sendha said Pradhan was loitering on the streets after killing his mother when police caught him. Fire-fighters from Tikabali doused the flames, she said.
Police suspect Pradhan might have killed his mother following a dispute over money. Sources said Pradhan’s younger brother Amir, who lives separately, told police that he had been pestering their mother for money ever since his release from jail. The woman might have refused him, sources said.
