Dibrugarh: Two wanted militants of the banned Ulfa (Independent) were apprehended in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on Sunday in a joint operation by the Assam Rifles (Khonsa battalion) and Arunachal Pradesh Police. Weapons and ammunition were also seized from them.
AR sources said the two insurgents had crossed the India-Myanmar border to try and make their way to Assam in a bid to carry out subversive activities. They were identified as self-styled private Nilutpal Asom alias Monjit Gogoi and self-styled private Upen Asom alias Ruhini Gogoi. Both are residents of Assam and were recruited by the outfit last year and had undergone arms training in Myanmar.
“Militants known to have bases in Myanmar have been relentlessly trying to cross into Indian territory to carry out subversive activities. As the general elections are slated to be held next year, this trend has increased in a bid to disturb the process,” the AR said in a statement.
